Hotmail SNDS: Trap message period
« on: May 26, 2014, 03:37:34 PM »

Hi,

Do you know if the trap message period which is shown in SNDS is reliable?

I'm trying to use it to identify spam traps, but sometimes i don't see any sends in pmta's accounting file in the specified period. Example: when I have 5/9/2014 10:09 PM -
5/9/2014 10:09 PM, i try to check for sends near this time of the day but I can't find anything.

Any ideas of what I should do/check?

Microsoft does not disclose any information regarding spamtrap hits, your bounce management should take care of that.

If your bouncemanagement is taking care of hardbounces/feedbackloops etc you are allowed to have a few without any reputation data, as long as you do not mail them again.

When searching for "spamtrap Microsoft" you'll be able to find more information on how the do it.

Actually Microsoft disclosures some information about spam traps like the number of hits per day/IP and the time range in which you hit them. This information can be used to find the customers who are hitting spam traps and possibly the spam trap itself.

I'm not sure about the relation between hardbounces/feedbackloops and spam traps that you're trying to make since they won't bounce and won't report your message as spam using a FBL.

What he meaned there is that if you keep your list clean and email to only engaged users, you will never see those traps anywhere.

@Calvin, correct (my mind was a bit off while typing the message)

Also, when we first found out that SNDS is listing trap hits in a specific period of time we tried to pinpoint hem.
All effort was useless, I assume they will bounce or generate a feedbackloop (if you are subscribed in the JMRP).
Though if it ever was a user causing the feedbackloop or automated system, you never know.

With the natural proces of adding customers a spamtrap can be triggered from time to time, as long as your bounce management is acting properly having 1 or 2 in a while can never cause problems.

It definitely is possible to get spam traps on your list by people submitting them to a non-double-opt-in form.

Someone can try to sabotage your business by getting a hold of spam trap addresses and 'subscribing' them to your list.

Were you trying to match them with the timeLogged field in pmta's accounting log? I'm trying to match against this field but it's not working. I'm starting to think that SNDS may be using the Date header.
