« on: November 03, 2012, 07:58:12 PM »

Hello fellows,
Let me start another trending topic.

What is the maximum number of ips you have used on a PowerMTA server at the same time ?

Oh, man, I'm curious about this one.  I've heard some really large numbers from customers.  It is rumored that one customer has 65,000+, but I have yet to actually see it.

65k ? Oh! :D

I am actually using 96x /24 = ~25k ips.
Powermta is not so fast but is still able to handle it. !!

96 /24 Networks? Holy ****, on one PMTA? This must be a motherf***ing monster machine.

I have 7 /24 on 4 PMTAs and thats enough to send Billions of mails per month. What volume are you sending on so many IPs?

You are using an i7? What HDD setup do you have, I often ran into IO Problems as soon as the PMTA has to queue some mails. And I already use a RAID10 with 4x SAS 15k HDDs, thinking about SSDs or FusionIO cards...

And is this a Border MTA or some internal stuff, and holy **** what kind of uplink do you have on such a single rick to handly so much traffic?

15k drives are good enough but you should try SSD ones.
4x 300gb SSD - Raid 10 is what we are using at the moment.
That box is using 40-50 mbit uplink.

Many many Billions of mail on a T3 uplink? sounds like this is a sms gateway or you are sending really small mails, I easily saturate a 1 gbit uplink with only 4million mails per hour....

PS: Fred shared this link on Twitter/Facebook and your forum avatar is used as preview image... :-)

Well,4 million emails per hour is using 1gbit fully ? What is the size of a single email body ?

PS: We love FRED. :D

Yeah Fred is awesome, do attend MAAWG Meetings, perhaps the next one in SanFran?

We have a lot of different content, sp mail body size depends on what customers are actually sending, our longterm avg is about 36KB but sometime I see mailstreams with single msg body size up to 500KB (mainly invoices as pdf attachments and such stuff)

so I'm wondering a littlebit about your msg body size, if you really only need a T3 uplink...

Well,
I dont have time to attend those meetings while working on that 25k ips :D but i will do my best next year.
That project sends small sized emails ranging from 5k to 15k.

perhaps the one in vienna, next summer, thats a short trip for us...

ok with msg size of 5kb you could have about 2.5 billion mails per month if you saturate your uplink with 100% all the time, thats pretty good, how many destination domains do you have?

I think our main performance problem at the moment is the sheer amount of different destination domains...
