IPs Sourcing and Hosting
« on: September 04, 2013, 02:28:57 PM »

We are a small ESP, and also doing our own promotional emailing. Our daily volume is about 600k.

Currently we are looking to build a new infrastructure for long-term growth. And I have few questions regarding IPs:

1. If we use only 10ips what is the risk of ISP/Spamhouse blocking whole /24, because some other customer of our hosting provider did something wrong?
We were recommended to to buy whole /24 just for this reason, even though we are not going to utilize them.

Can someone shed light on how ip blocks are being blocked/blacklisted?

2. It's inevitable that here and there we will get some complaints to IP address. How to go about finding mail friendly host?

3. Will colocation be a better option then getting a dedi? Why?

I'll be grateful for any input. James.

Hey james,

1) I always recommend my BIG volume customers to get the whole C range even if they wont use it.So please do it.

2) There are many ISPs out there allowing legal mail activity.Just start with searching some DCs and email them asking whether they allow email activity.Believe me you will find lots of providers.

3) As you are a marketer, you might need to change your ips every 6 months or so.I would not go for a colo.

Thank for the reply Calvin, I will follow your advice.

Getting IPs became very hard lately. How would I go about getting a whole C range assigned to me?

We follow very good mailing practices, so we are able to mail from the same IP over a year, and keeping senderscore at about 90. Does it make a colo to be a good option then?

When we looked into it a year or two ago, it seemed that most of AWS's IP addresses were blacklisted or came with really bad reputation. We host our main application servers with Aws, but host our mail servers elsewhere with non AWS IP addresses.
