I noticed some strange behavior with gmail.com. When watching the monitor, I noticed that the number of recipient would climb to a high number (1000+) with no connections open and no error response shown. Then, all of the sudden, connections open and the queue empties out.

After logging the commands I noticed this happens when Gmail sends back the response "452-4.2.2 The email account that you tried to reach is over quota." PMTA will stop all connections and it only starts sending when the "retry" time is hit again (currently at 10m). Is this normal behavior? Here are the commands from the logs:

This is normal behavior. PowerMTA manages the connections and queues based on the responses it gets from the ISPs and the settings in your config file(s). The settings make it so that the queue waits a specified amount of time before retrying to connect when it has received certain responses.

Is there anything you can recommend to speed up delivery for gmail.com then? The only resolution so far has been dropping the retry rate to below 5m, but in that case I am hitting their servers a lot and even then I can have delays up to 5min for emails.

Could you send us your full log file and config file showing what takes place during the session with Gmail.  If their 503 response is breaking the connection, perhaps you should try disabling pipelining to gmail to see if that has any impact.

Was there any further info on this topic after the logs were reviewed by port25. I see the same in logs here. I am considering an smtp-pattern-list that considers this 4xx from Gmail as a hardbounce in order to workaround this issue.
